The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Armah Kofi Buah, praised the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno. He recognized the Ghana Police Service for their efforts against illegal mining, known as galamsey.
Buah spoke at the Global Mining Summit on June 2, 2025. He highlighted how the IGP and police have helped combat illegal mining. Their work has also protected water bodies from pollution.
In recent months, the Police Service intensified operations nationwide. In Samreboi and nearby areas, a special Anti-Galamsey Taskforce recovered over 100 excavators and bulldozers. They also seized weapons and Chanfang machines used in illegal mining.
Many arrests have been made, with suspects facing legal proceedings. Similar enforcement actions occurred in Ashanti, Eastern, Western, Central, and Upper West regions. This shows the Police Service's commitment to ending illegal mining across Ghana.
The Police reaffirmed their dedication to collaborating with stakeholders. They aim to maintain momentum in the anti-galamsey campaign. This will help protect Ghana’s natural resources and water bodies for the long term.
Ghana also marks ten years since a deadly flood and fire incident on June 3.
