Many Britons are risking their dental health by snacking on sugary treats at night. Dentists warn that skipping bedtime brushing can lead to serious issues.
One in three adults, or 33 percent, snack every night. Over two-thirds, or 68 percent, choose chocolates, sweets, and biscuits. Almost half of adults, 47 percent, skip brushing at least once a week.
The Oral Health Foundation surveyed 2,000 people about these habits. They call this a "dangerous double habit" that can increase tooth decay and gum disease.
Dr. Nigel Carter from the charity said these findings are alarming. He noted that late-night snacking harms our teeth significantly. Sugar and bacteria left on teeth overnight produce acids that damage enamel.
This can lead to tooth decay and gum disease over time. The study suggests up to 26 million British adults snack on sugary treats after dinner three times a week.
Young adults are the biggest offenders in this trend. Eighty-six percent of those aged 18-24 admit to nighttime snacking. Most of them, about 81 percent, choose sugary options.
Young people also tend to skip brushing before bed more often than others. Nearly half of them, or 43 percent, miss brushing several times a week.
Dr. Carter advises avoiding snacks after dinner when possible. If you must snack, choose options like cheese or nuts instead of sweets.
He emphasizes saving sugary treats for mealtimes and always brushing before bed. This is essential for preventing tooth decay.
The Oral Health Foundation recommends using fluoride toothpaste twice daily for two minutes each time. They also suggest reducing sugary foods and drinks in your diet.
Public satisfaction with NHS dentistry is currently very low as well. Many struggle to get appointments and some resort to pulling out their own teeth at home.
