Zambia president orders ministers to stop sleeping in cabinet

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has warned ministers against sleeping during meetings. He linked their inattentiveness to "indulgence" and lack of self-control.

During a swearing-in ceremony, he expressed concern about ministers dozing off. "If you can start conking there, that is a crime," he said.

Hichilema did not define "indulgence," but local media suggest it means excessive drinking and partying. He warned that such behavior could expose state secrets and delay public services.

Since taking office in 2021, Hichilema has dismissed several senior officials for performance issues. He welcomed newly appointed Local Government Minister Gift Sialubalo on Monday.

The president mentioned he had privately raised his concerns before going public. He noted some ministers share confidential information on social media during "happy hours."

"I have advised cabinet to practice self-censure," he stated. Public officials must exercise self-control and avoid over-indulgence.

Citing the Bible, he warned that such behavior could lead to self-destruction. He questioned how anyone could participate in meetings while sleeping.

"The message is clear: you are not interested in cabinet deliberations," he said. Hichilema plans to seek a second term in next year's general election.

He may face tough competition from his predecessor, Edgar Lungu, who is currently barred from running.
