Zoomlion Nigeria partners with Lagos State to transform waste management

The Lagos State Government has signed a new Waste Management Agreement. This agreement is with ZoomLion Nigeria Limited, part of Ghana's Jospong Group of Companies. The partnership aims to improve waste management in Lagos State.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong formalized the deal at the State House in Ikeja. The collaboration will develop two key facilities: a material recovery plant and a waste recycling plant. These facilities will help modernize waste management in Lagos.

Currently, Lagos generates about 13,000 tonnes of waste daily. Key parts of the agreement include building Transfer Loading Stations (TLS) at two dumpsites. These stations are located at Olusosun Dumpsite in Ketu and Solous III Dumpsite in Igando.

The TLS at Olusosun will divert 2,500 tonnes of waste daily to a new Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Ikorodu. Meanwhile, the TLS at Solous III will divert 1,500 tonnes daily to an MRF in Badagry. Self-tipping tricycles will also be used for better waste collection in hard-to-reach areas.

All projects are expected to be completed within 18 months. Governor Sanwo-Olu called this agreement a "turning point" for waste management in Lagos. He noted it would create over 5,000 jobs and improve operations for private sector waste operators.

He stated that this partnership would transform how Lagos manages and recycles waste. It aims to turn waste into resources rather than burdens. Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that job losses would not occur; instead, there would be dignified employment opportunities.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, called the project a major milestone toward a circular economy. He mentioned that wealth could now be generated from discarded materials after thorough reviews by officials before approval.

Dr. Agyepong from Jospong Group highlighted the importance of African partnerships for sustainable development. He assured that ZoomLion Nigeria Ltd., would meet all terms of the agreement on time. This partnership is set to redefine waste management in Lagos by turning waste into valuable resources.
