Zoomlion Ghana Limited is facing scrutiny over its wage structure for sanitation workers. This proposal is under the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).
Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni reported that Zoomlion plans to pay GHS1,308 per sweeper. However, GHS888 will be kept by the company. Only GHS420 will go to the workers.
Zoomlion stated that this proposal is still being discussed. Awuni's investigation shows past proposals were accepted without changes. This raises concerns about fairness in the arrangement.
The YEA and municipal assemblies can manage sanitation workers directly. They question the need for a third-party contractor.
This issue isn't new for Zoomlion. Previous contracts reportedly paid sanitation workers as little as GHS250 monthly. The company retained a large portion of these funds.
Critics say this control leads to exploitative conditions for workers. Many lack basic benefits like health insurance and pensions.
The controversy has attracted political attention. Acting YEA CEO Malik Basintale said he won't renew Zoomlion’s contract if salaries remain at GHS250 monthly.
His statement reflects public pressure for reform and fair compensation for workers.
