Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, praised Zoomlion Ghana Limited. He recognized its sanitation infrastructure as unmatched in West Africa. This positions Ghana as a leader in sustainable waste management.
The Minister highlighted Zoomlion's modern recycling facilities. These facilities convert waste into compost and charcoal using sewage-to-resource technologies. He shared his admiration during an interview on Accra 100.5 FM's Citizen Show on April 2, 2025.
Mr. Ibrahim noted that Zoomlion’s network of recycling plants aligns with Ghana’s policies. This includes the 2016 ban on ocean dumping of faecal waste. The policy was introduced under John Dramani Mahama to reduce coastal pollution.
He emphasized the significant drop in cholera cases due to advanced waste management systems by Zoomlion. However, he raised concerns about a GHS 1.2 billion debt owed to the company from the previous administration.
The Minister stressed that the government is working with Zoomlion to tackle waste management issues. They are particularly focused on improving plastic waste recycling efforts. Mr. Ibrahim called for stronger partnerships between the government and private firms for better waste infrastructure.
He linked recent cholera outbreaks in coastal cities to gaps in public sanitation education. Cities affected include Cape Coast, Winneba, and Takoradi. The Minister urged for more advocacy against reckless waste disposal with media collaboration.
“Zoomlion’s work goes beyond street cleaning,” he stated. “It safeguards national health and promotes environmental sustainability.” He called for continued cooperation between public and private sectors to maintain sanitation improvements.
