**Trump Imposes 10% Import Tariffs on Goods from Ghana**
On April 2, President Donald Trump announced a 10% tax on imports from Ghana. This is part of a broader tariff crackdown affecting many countries. The move aims to address what Trump calls an economic emergency.
The new tariffs will start on April 5. Certain nations will see higher duties beginning on April 9. Trump stated, "Today we are standing up for the American worker."
This tax hike could disrupt global trade dynamics. About 60 countries labeled as "worst offenders" will face these increased rates. Notable among them are the European Union and China.
According to BBC reports, Trump views this as payback for unfair trade practices.
**Ghana's Trade with the US**
In 2024, total goods trade between the US and Ghana was $2.1 billion. US exports to Ghana reached $967.3 million, a rise of 12.3% from 2023. However, imports from Ghana fell to $1.2 billion, down by 28%.
The US trade deficit with Ghana grew to $204.4 million in 2024, increasing by 73.3%.
**Impact on Other Countries**
China faces a new tariff of 34%, adding to an existing 20%. This raises total duties on Chinese goods to at least 54%. Japan and India have tariffs set at 24% and 26%, respectively.
Goods from Vietnam and Cambodia will incur tariffs of 46% and 49%. Smaller nations like Lesotho will see even higher levies of up to 50%.
