Kalyjay, Yvonne Okoro, and Lydia Forson Receive Chip-Embedded Passports
A video of the chip-embedded passport launch is trending on social media.
Top celebrities like Yvonne Okoro and Lydia Forson received their passports at the event.
Social media users shared their thoughts in the comment section of the video.
The chip-embedded passport was launched in Accra on April 28, 2025. This launch aligns with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards.
The new passports replace biometric passports. Kalyjay, Yvonne Okoro, and Lydia Forson were among the first to receive them.
Photos and videos showed the actresses receiving their passports from Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Kalyjay also received his official copy during the event.
In his speech, Ablakwa announced plans for a mass rollout of these new passports. He expressed hope that acquiring a passport would become easier for Ghanaians.
The old biometric version will be phased out by the end of 2030. His Facebook post about this garnered over 200 likes and 100 comments.
Many social media users reacted to the announcement. Some expressed doubts about using celebrities for such initiatives.
One user questioned why every government uses celebrities for new projects. Another noted that this project was launched on December 4, 2024.
Comments included concerns about those with old passports needing replacements now or later.
Earlier reports indicated that the passport office would implement a three-shift system to improve services. Minister Ablakwa expects this change will enhance passport application processes significantly.
