MTN Ghana Reports Monthly Mobile Money Fraud Statistics
A top MTN Ghana executive is trending after sharing fraud data. The Chief Regulatory, Risk, and Compliance Officer revealed that 400 to 500 customers fall victim to fraud each month.
He emphasized the need for better media engagement. This will help educate customers about mobile money fraud.
In an interview on Channel One TV, he shared troubling statistics. With over 17 million users, more than 23,000 report suspicious calls monthly. These calls are attempts by fraudsters to scam them.
Out of these reports, 400 to 500 people are defrauded each month. Godwin Tamakloe noted that calls to customer care have increased recently. This shows that more people are aware of the scams.
Tamakloe stated that their media efforts are working. More customers now recognize and report fraudulent attempts. He said, "Customers become the first line of defense against fraud."
Despite the high number of victims, many people are alerting MTN about scams. They report suspicious calls and take action by switching off their phones.
In another incident, a young Ghanaian lady went viral after losing money in a scam. She received an alert on April 13 about a withdrawal from her mobile wallet.
Almost GH¢12,000 was taken without her approval. When she called MTN customer care for help, she was told to wait 15 working days for assistance.
