"Ofori-Atta sat by indolently" - Special Prosecutor slams ex-minister for withholding medical updates

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, criticized former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. He accused Ofori-Atta of not promptly notifying his office about important medical changes.

Agyebeng claimed that Ofori-Atta deliberately withheld updates. These updates could have helped reschedule his appearance before investigators.

During a press briefing in Accra on June 2, 2025, Agyebeng stated that Ofori-Atta's lawyers informed the Office on May 28, 2025. They mentioned a cancer diagnosis and surgery scheduled for June 13, 2025. However, the OSP expected timely communication about any treatment changes.

Earlier correspondence from February 2025 indicated surgery was set for March 20 or 21. When that procedure did not happen, Ofori-Atta should have informed the OSP immediately.

“Mr. Ofori-Atta has known since March 21, 2025, that no surgery would occur,” Agyebeng said. “Yet he chose not to inform the OSP of these fundamental changes.”

Instead of timely communication, Ofori-Atta waited until six days before his June appearance to offer a video interview. He suggested the OSP view his biopsy report. Agyebeng saw this as an attempt to surprise the investigative body.

The OSP rejected the virtual interview option and declared him wanted again. They began processes to place him back on Interpol’s Red Notice list.

Agyebeng emphasized that all suspects must appear in person to provide their caution statements.
