"This is nothing short of political harassment" – NPP slams NDC over arrests of party members

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned political intimidation by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

In a statement on May 23, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong expressed concern over this trend. He claimed state security agencies are being misused to suppress dissent. The NPP views this as an attack on Ghana’s democracy and rule of law.

The party cited the arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi, known as "Adenta Kumi," as evidence of state-sponsored persecution. They believe his arrest is linked to a petition he submitted to President John Dramani Mahama. This petition called for dissolving a committee reviewing calls for Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's removal.

The NPP stated, "Instead of addressing the petition's concerns, the state chose intimidation." They see this as an affront to democratic accountability and justice.

Additionally, the NPP mentioned an incident involving Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, or Chairman Wontumi. Armed personnel visited his residence with a search warrant. The NPP called this visit unwarranted and politically intimidating.

They described it as “political harassment.” The party warned that using state security against opposition figures threatens Ghana’s multiparty democracy.

The NPP concluded that these actions represent a pattern of abuse aimed at weakening opposition voices. They urged all Ghanaians and defenders of democracy to condemn these acts by the NDC government.
