"We are not oppressed in our homes" – Hajia Zaliatu Kasim dispels misconception about Muslim women

Hajia Zaliatu Kasim is the Founder and Creative Director of ZaQi EnCLOTHE. She recently addressed misconceptions about Muslim women in an interview on Joy Prime’s morning show.

She stated that many believe Muslim women are oppressed by their husbands. However, she emphasized that Islam provides protection, dignity, and empowerment for women.

During the discussion titled "The Beauty of Modest Dressing," Hajia Zaliatu explained that oppression comes from misinterpretation of Islamic teachings. She clarified that men in Islam are guardians and protectors, not oppressors.

Hajia Zaliatu described men as a source of hope and stability within families. "In Islam, men support women; they do not suppress them," she said.

She noted that people often misinterpret these roles as oppressive. With proper understanding, one can see that Islam offers guidance rather than oppression.

Hajia Zaliatu compared societal roles in Northern Nigeria to illustrate her point. In some areas, men dominate marketplaces while women manage homes. This dynamic is due to cultural evolution, not force.

She stressed that Islamic guidelines are meant to shape a righteous life. These rules serve as a moral compass for believers, not burdensome restrictions.

"Every religion has its interpretations," she said. "Islam provides principles for a dignified life."

As a fashion entrepreneur, Hajia Zaliatu discussed modest dressing and the hijab. She pointed out that modesty is not exclusive to Muslim women; many Christian and Jewish women also embrace it.

"Dressing modestly shows self-respect and faith," she explained. "It’s about identity."

She highlighted that modesty does not mean lacking style or elegance. Women can be fashionable while adhering to Islamic principles.

"You can dress modestly and still look beautiful," she added. "Modest fashion reflects dignity."

Hajia Zaliatu also mentioned dress codes for men in Islam. Modesty applies to both genders; men have restrictions too.

Muslim men cannot wear certain accessories like gold jewelry due to religious teachings.

"Islam provides guidelines for both genders," she concluded, ensuring balance in society.
