"You don’t go to catch a wild dog without arming yourself" – Dep. Min. defends armed raid on Wontumi’s home

Deputy Interior Minister Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi defended the armed security operation at NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako's home. He compared the situation to pursuing a wild dog.

A joint team of National Investigations Bureau (NIB) operatives and police raided Wontumi’s residence early Friday. They had a search warrant for the operation, but its details are not public.

Mr. Terlabi called the raid part of an "intelligence-led" investigation. The operation led to a standoff as NPP supporters tried to block any arrests. This raised concerns about excessive force being used.

Opposition leaders criticized the incident, linking it to recent raids on other officials. They see it as a pattern of intimidation against political figures.

Mr. Terlabi dismissed these criticisms. He stated, "You don’t go to catch a wild dog without arming yourself." He emphasized that security protocols were followed during the operation.

He believes they were adequately prepared for any resistance. In an interview with Citi FM, he said, "The security services are on top of their job." He added that no one is above the law in Ghana.

Regarding the aggressive approach, Mr. Terlabi explained that preparation was necessary due to Wontumi's past statements. He noted that if Wontumi is targeted, no one can stop authorities from questioning him.

He confirmed that security acted based on intelligence but did not share all details publicly. The goal was not to harm Wontumi but to invite him for questioning.

Mr. Terlabi advised against obstructing law enforcement and suggested critics take their grievances to court instead.

On JoyNews’ The Pulse show, he warned those encouraging party supporters to gather at police operations to stay away.

He urged everyone to let security services do their work properly. If there are concerns about their actions, he encouraged going through legal channels rather than protests outside of court.
