Abdul Karim Zito's month as interim coach of Asante Kotoko has gone well.
He has overseen four games, winning three. The wins include 1-0 against Aduana Stars, 4-1 against Dreams F.C., and 1-0 against Berekum Chelsea. There was also a goalless draw with Accra Hearts of Oak.
The win over Berekum Chelsea in the MTN FA Cup semi-final was significant. It marked Kotoko's return to the final for the first time in eight years.
In the league, Kotoko is just three points behind leaders Nations F.C. They have three games left to play.
Reflecting on his first month, Zito noted clear improvements in the team. He said they listen to him when he speaks.
Zito emphasized that he communicates clearly with his players. He explained how he guides them on what he wants from them.
Having won five league titles and two FA Cups as a player, Zito feels a strong bond with his team.
He mentioned that many players are adults with families, which requires good management skills. He believes shouting is not always necessary; it’s about addressing actions, not individuals.
Zito added that training sessions are enjoyable for everyone involved. They joke around and maintain a friendly atmosphere while still focusing on advice and guidance.
Kotoko will face Gold Stars on Sunday at Baba Yara Stadium. They will then host Medeama S.C. there on Friday, May 30th, before finishing the season at Vision F.C. on June 8th, 2025.
