'I hate disappointing people' - Osaka loses to Badosa

Naomi Osaka, a four-time major winner, expressed her disappointment after losing to Paula Badosa. The match took place in the first round of the French Open.

Osaka, 27, recently won her first title in nearly two years. This victory came after her maternity break in 2023.

In the match against Badosa, Osaka saved a set point. She dominated the first-set tie-break but lost 6-7 (1-7) 6-1 6-4. Badosa, the Spanish 10th seed, showed great resilience.

After the match, Osaka left her news conference briefly to compose herself. "I hate disappointing people," she said emotionally. She is currently working with Patrick Mouratoglou, who coached Serena Williams.

Osaka has not advanced past the third round of a major since returning to tennis after giving birth to her daughter Shai in July 2023. During the match against Badosa, she called for a medical timeout due to blisters on her fingers.

"Since Rome, I have had blisters on my hands," Osaka explained. "It's from the friction of clay."

In another match earlier on Monday, ninth seed Emma Navarro lost quickly to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. Navarro suffered a heavy defeat of 6-0 6-1 in just 57 minutes.

Navarro did not hold serve at all during this match. Bouzas Maneiro was close to achieving a rare double bagel but Navarro avoided it with help from Bouzas Maneiro's double fault.

Earlier this year, Navarro won a WTA final with a score of 6-0 6-0 against Emiliana Arango in Mexico. However, she struggled against Bouzas Maneiro and made many unforced errors.

Caroline Garcia also faced an emotional farewell at the French Open. The former world number four lost her first-round match to Bernarda Pera with scores of 6-4 6-4.

Garcia shed tears as she prepared for her final appearance at Roland Garros. Her best result there was reaching the quarter-finals in 2017.

"I've always dreamed of winning this tournament," Garcia said on court. "Unfortunately, I never achieved it."

Three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek advanced and will meet Britain's Emma Raducanu next. Madison Keys dropped only three games while defeating Daria Saville in just under an hour.

Elena Rybakina overcame some struggles to beat Julia Riera with scores of 6-1 4-6 6-4. Daria Kasatkina won her first Grand Slam match as an Australian by defeating Katerina Siniakova.

Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova secured her first win of the year against Tatjana Maria. Meanwhile, Jelena Ostapenko fought back from losing the first set to win against Polina Kudermetova.
