Ghanaian sprinter Abdul Rasheed Saminu is thrilled after breaking the national 100m record last month.
He ran an impressive 9.86 seconds at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. This time not only set a new national record but also marked the fastest time in the world this year.
The 27-year-old was named Male Athlete of the Year at the 2025 Stampede of Champions. He earned this honor for his outstanding performances with the University of South Florida.
“It feels amazing,” Saminu said about his achievement.
“I’ve worked incredibly hard to reach this milestone. My goal was to qualify for the World Championships in Tokyo. Setting a national record while doing that makes it even more special.”
Saminu also competed at the Paris 2024 Olympics. He reached the semifinals in the 100m but narrowly missed a spot in the final.
