Former Ghana international Kevin-Prince Boateng has launched a football agency called Rookie & Champ. The agency aims to groom and guide the next generation of stars. Boateng wants to help players mentally prepare for football's unpredictable spotlight.
He shared his experience at the TransferRoom summit. "I went pro at 18 and I was loving it," he recalled. However, after moving to Tottenham, the coach told him, “I don’t want you.” This moment changed everything for him.
Now, Boateng wants to be the voice he lacked during that time. He believes mental readiness is crucial in today’s game. Players can gain fame from a single goal or viral moment.
“Today, you score one goal or play well for half a season,” he explained. “Suddenly you’re worth 30 million and chasing followers.” It’s challenging to keep players grounded in such an environment.
That’s why Rookie & Champ focuses on mindset over market value. “We select players who are mentally stable,” he said. Involving their parents is also essential for success.
Boateng often reflects on what could have been with better guidance. “If I had this, I would’ve played ten straight years at Real Madrid,” he stated confidently.
His current focus is on building futures for young players. He wants them ready for pressure and expectations beyond football. “A Rookie & Champ player at 18 is prepared for everything,” he said proudly.
