'World Cup can be incentive for Russia to end war'

US President Donald Trump believes Russia's participation in the 2026 World Cup could encourage peace in Ukraine.

The Russian national football team has been banned from international competitions since their invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Trump aims to end the Ukraine war on "day one" if re-elected in November 2024.

Currently, Russia cannot play at the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Qualification began in September 2023, with 45 spots available besides the three hosts.

During a meeting about the World Cup, Trump suggested reinstating Russia might help end the war.

He sat next to FIFA president Gianni Infantino and was unaware of Russia's ban.

"I didn't know that. Is that right?" Trump asked Infantino, who confirmed it.

Infantino said they hope for peace so Russia can be readmitted.

Trump responded, "That's possible. Hey, that could be a good incentive."

He emphasized the need to stop the conflict, noting many young lives are lost weekly.

Trump stated that Infantino makes decisions about Russia's participation and he has no influence over it.

BBC Sport has reached out to FIFA for comments.

US Vice President JD Vance also attended the meeting with Trump. He expressed excitement about welcoming fans for the tournament but stressed they must return home afterward.

The US will host 78 of the 104 matches, including the final game.

The World Tourism Forum Institute warned strict immigration policies may disrupt international arrivals significantly.

Vance noted they expect visitors from nearly 100 countries for this event.

"We want them to come and celebrate," he said. "But when time is up, they'll have to go home."

Next month’s FIFA Club World Cup will take place across 12 stadiums in the US.

About two million overseas visitors are expected for this tournament.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem mentioned they are processing travel documents and visa applications now.

"This will help us prepare for next year's World Cup as well," she added.
