2024/25 GPL: Accra Lions relegated following defeat to Dreams FC

Accra Lions were relegated from the Ghana Premier League on Sunday. They lost 2-0 to Dreams FC in their final home game at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Lions started strong and controlled the early play. In the 10th minute, Fuzy Taylor sent a dangerous cross into the area. It narrowly missed connecting with a teammate.

Just one minute later, Lucky Nwafor’s header hit the crossbar from another Taylor delivery. The Lions kept pressing, and in the 41st minute, Edmond Amakye took a long-range shot. This forced a crucial save from the Dreams FC goalkeeper.

Controversy arose in the 27th minute when referee decisions led to yellow cards for Awoute and Setordjie of Accra Lions after protests.

Despite their pressure, Dreams FC scored first in the 51st minute through Razak Salifu. Yao Sokpoli almost equalized four minutes later but hit the woodwork instead.

In an effort to change the game, Accra Lions made three substitutions in the 73rd minute. However, Dreams FC extended their lead in the 84th minute with a goal from Aziz Musibau.

This defeat confirmed Accra Lions’ relegation after five years in the top flight. The club debuted in Ghana Division One – Zone 3 in 2018 and earned promotion to the Premier League in 2020/2021.

They scored 57 goals over 28 matches that season. Striker Rauf Salifu was their top scorer with 21 goals. In their first Premier League season, Accra Lions quickly became competitive.

They finished as runners-up in the 2023/2024 season with one of football's youngest squads. On matchday seven against Bofoakwa Tano, they fielded an average starting XI age of just 18.09 years—a record for Ghana's Premier League.

Their relegation marks a disappointing end to what began as a promising season. Now, they must regroup in Division One and aim for a return to the top tier.
