2024/25 GPL: Hearts dispatch relegated Legon Cities

Accra Hearts of Oak defeated Legon Cities 2-0 on Sunday. The match took place at the University of Ghana Stadium.

With Cities already relegated, and Hearts' title hopes gone, many expected a dull game. However, the match was quite lively.

The first chance came in just six minutes. Kwesi Asmah found Kwabena Boateng, but his shot went wide.

Nine minutes later, Asmah was fouled near the area. Hussein Mohammed's free kick cross was wasted by Hearts.

In the 20th minute, Kwabena Boateng scored with a header from Raphael Amponsah's corner. This goal energized Legon Cities, but they struggled to respond effectively.

Frustration grew for Cities when Takyi Alabah received a yellow card for fouling Asmah in the 28th minute.

On the half-hour mark, Frank Akoto made a crucial interception to stop another Hearts attack. Just before halftime, Kwesi Gyesi tried a long-range shot that Hearts keeper Sharif Shuaib saved easily.

After halftime, Legon Cities started stronger. Gyesi and Albert Yeboah moved the ball quickly and accurately. However, their teammates lacked intensity.

Three minutes into the second half, Michael Awuah Mensah scored to make it 2-0 for Hearts.

From then on, Hearts focused on defending their lead while Cities tried to minimize damage.

Despite this win, Hearts of Oak remain in 5th place for three weeks straight.

Hearts will finish their season with a home match against Samartex 1996. Meanwhile, Legon Cities will host Dreams F.C. on the final day of the season.
