Carlos Alcaraz from Spain won the Italian Open final. He defeated world number one Jannik Sinner of Italy. The score was 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.
Sinner returned to competition after a three-month doping ban. He aimed to be the first Italian man to win since 1976. Adriano Panatta was the last Italian champion at this tournament.
Alcaraz won a tense tie-break in the first set. Sinner had two set points but missed a crucial backhand return. In the second set, Alcaraz played brilliantly and sealed his victory with a cross-court volley.
"I'm really happy to get my first Rome title," said Alcaraz. He hopes it won't be his last title there.
Alcaraz praised Sinner's return, saying, "I'm happy to see Jannik back." He acknowledged that returning after three months is tough.
Sinner expressed pride in reaching the final despite challenges. "It’s been a great result just to be here," he said. He added that he gave it his all but felt limited today.
