2025 Unity Cup: Black Stars to settle for third-place playoff after defeat to Nigeria

The Black Stars lost to Nigeria in the 2025 Unity Cup. This defeat means they will not reach the final.

Cyriel Dessers scored first for Nigeria. An own goal by Razak Simpson increased Ghana's troubles. Brandon Thomas-Asante came off the bench to score a consolation goal.

Nigeria started strong, with Dessers scoring in just 14 minutes. He took advantage of a slip by Simpson while clearing a cross.

Simpson's night worsened when a header deflected off him, beating goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. Ghana had to substitute Aaron Essel due to injury. Ebenezer Annan replaced him during his debut match.

At halftime, Nigeria led 2-0 comfortably. Coach Otto Addo made two changes at the break, bringing in Caleb Yirenkyi and Thomas-Asante.

Ghana improved in the second half and created chances. They finally scored in the 70th minute when Annan assisted Thomas-Asante.

Debutant Christopher Bonsu Baah nearly assisted Jordan Ayew, but he missed the cross. Yirenkyi and Abu Francis also tried to equalize late in the game but failed.

After 90 minutes, Nigeria secured victory again over Ghana. This marks their second consecutive win against them at senior level.

With this result, Nigeria will face Jamaica in the final on Saturday, May 31. Meanwhile, Ghana will play Trinidad and Tobago for third place.
