2025 Unity Cup: Otto Addo backs Afena-Gyan to utilise recent Black Stars call-up

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo supports Felix Afena-Gyan's return.

Afena-Gyan, 22, rejoins the national team after a three-year absence.

He gained attention in 2021 by scoring twice for AS Roma against Genoa.

Although he received a call-up later that year, he declined it.

He was also not selected for the 2022 FIFA World Cup squad.

Currently, he is on loan at Juventus Next Gen from Cremonese.

He has scored six goals in 30 appearances for the Serie C side.

Before upcoming matches, Addo spoke to the media about Afena-Gyan.

He believes Afena-Gyan deserves another chance despite past struggles.

"There are many young players, and he's one of them," Addo said.

"He did well before, which is why we want to give him another chance."

Addo acknowledged that careers have ups and downs in football.

"This is another opportunity for him to showcase his talent," he added.

Afena-Gyan will join the Black Stars in London today.

The team prepares to face Nigeria on Wednesday, May 28, at Gtech Community Stadium.

The winner will advance to play Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday, May 31.
