2026 World Cup: US Embassy admonishes football fans to use proper channels for visa applications

The United States Embassy in Accra has important advice for Ghanaians. This is especially for football fans traveling to the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. They should follow the correct procedures when applying for visas.

Elliot Fertik, Consul General of the U.S. Embassy in Accra, spoke about this. He urged travelers to avoid illegal entry methods into the United States. “We want Ghanaians to understand how to apply for a visa,” he said.

Fertik highlighted the embassy’s commitment to educating the public on visa processes. Misinformation or noncompliance can lead to serious consequences. “We are committed to helping Ghanaians avoid problems with their visas,” he added.

He warned that violating U.S. immigration laws could result in penalties. “If you enter illegally or lie on your application, there will be consequences.” He also mentioned that working without permission or overstaying a visa would attract serious sanctions.

The Department of State carefully reviews all visa applications. They check for issues like arrests, criminal convictions, and overstays. “We use all available tools to protect U.S. national security and enforce our laws,” Fertik stated.

Fertik expressed hope that Ghana will qualify for the 2026 World Cup. He welcomed everyone to visit the U.S. for both events. “We look forward to co-hosting the World Cup in 2026 and hosting the Summer Olympics in 2028,” he said.
