Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President Richard Akpokavie has addressed the Black Rockets. He urged Ghana’s national youth boxing team to avoid complacency. They recently performed well at the African Youth Amateur Boxing Championship in Conakry, Guinea.
On May 28, a medal ceremony took place at Olympic House. The Black Rockets presented their gold medals to President Akpokavie. The team includes Desmond Pappoe (middleweight, 75kg), George Nii Nortey Dowuona (bantamweight, 54kg), and Mathias Ashitey (flyweight, 51kg).
Their victories received praise from the National Sports Authority leadership. The event included Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) officials like President DSI Bernard Quartey and 1st Vice President Alhaji Dauda Fuseini. Other attendees were 2nd Vice President Solomon Otoo Lartey and Treasurer Mustapha Nettey.
GOC representatives present included Secretary General Kassim Mohammed Muniru and Treasurer Evans Yeboah. Assistant Treasurer Nii Lante Bannerman and Board Members Kamal Sulley and George Lamptey also attended.
During the presentation, Akpokavie stressed humility and perseverance. He said, “Don’t think you’ve arrived.” He encouraged the boxers to prove their success through hard work. Akpokavie reminded them to stay focused on future achievements, especially the Youth Olympic qualifiers in Angola this December.
