Football legend Abedi Ayew Pele has highlighted football’s ability to promote peace ahead of Ghana’s 2024 General Elections.
With tensions rising ahead of the December 7 polls, featuring Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (NPP) and former President John Dramani Mahama (NDC) as key contenders, Pele believes football can foster unity and calm.
Recalling FIFA’s use of football to encourage peace during the 1990s Yugoslavian war, Pele noted how a World XI versus Europe match in Kosovo temporarily silenced gunfire and united people.
He urged Ghanaians to remain patient and allow leaders to ensure peaceful elections. A decorated footballer, Pele, an AFCON and Champions League winner, emphasized football’s power to bring people together and its role as a "peacemaker" in turbulent times.
