Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has invited U.S. Ambassador Virginia Palmer to his office. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 7.
The purpose of the invitation is to discuss President Donald Trump's recent tariff decision. Trump announced a 10% tariff on goods imported from Ghana.
This new tariff comes as part of broader trade measures. These include a 34% levy on imports from China and a 20% tax on European Union goods. This indicates rising global trade tensions.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Ablakwa emphasized the importance of the meeting. He hopes Ambassador Palmer will explain the reasons behind the tariff.
Local businesses and policymakers in Ghana are concerned about this decision.
"I can confirm that I have invited US Ambassador Virginia Palmer to my office," he stated. "She will clarify President Trump's imposition of the 10% tariff."
The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana has also expressed concern. They issued a press statement on Friday, April 4, condemning the U.S. government's move.
The Association criticized it as a disregard for World Trade Organization protocols. They warned that this could severely impact Ghana’s economy.
