Nigeria’s Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, has responded to Jamie Carragher’s comments downplaying the prestige of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Carragher claimed that winning AFCON would not boost Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or, sparking criticism from African football figures.
Musa, a key player in Nigeria’s 2013 AFCON victory, reacted by posting a picture of himself holding the trophy on X (formerly Twitter) with the message: **“AFCON. Respect.”** His response reinforces the growing demand for AFCON to receive the recognition it deserves.
The tournament, held since 1957, has gained global significance, with the 2023 edition attracting millions of viewers and increased sponsorship.
Musa’s stance highlights the deep pride African players have in competing for their nations on such a prestigious stage.
