Carlos Alcaraz began his French Open title defense with a straight-set win. He defeated Italian qualifier Giulio Zeppieri 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. The match lasted just one hour and 56 minutes.
Alcaraz aims to be the first man since Rafael Nadal in 2020 to retain the Roland Garros title. Despite winning 27 of his last 29 clay matches, he did not expect an easy start.
"I expected a worse level for me, honestly," said Alcaraz. He noted that the first round is always tough for players. "I'm really proud of this performance," he added.
In preparation for the French Open, Alcaraz won titles in Monte Carlo and Rome. He was also runner-up to Holger Rune in Barcelona, marking his only loss in 16 clay matches this year.
Earlier this season, he faced a surprise loss to David Goffin at the Miami Open. His only success on hard courts was at the Rotterdam Open.
Reflecting on his season, Alcaraz said it has been a rollercoaster ride. "I've had great results but also early losses," he explained.
"Now I feel like I'm on a good path again." He feels more comfortable as he approaches matches.
Alcaraz holds a record of 19 wins and 3 losses at the French Open. Next, he will face Hungarian player Fabian Marozsan in the second round.
