Carlos Alcaraz defeated world number one Jannik Sinner in the Italian Open final. The score was 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.
Sinner returned to competition after a three-month doping ban. He aimed to be the first Italian man to win since Adriano Panatta in 1976.
Alcaraz won a tense tie-break in the first set. He then dominated the second set with impressive play.
Sinner had two set points but missed a crucial backhand return. Alcaraz capitalized on this mistake and sealed his victory with a cross-court volley.
"I'm really happy to get my first Rome title," said Alcaraz. He hopes it won't be his last.
He praised Sinner's performance, saying, "I'm glad to see him back at this level."
Alcaraz acknowledged Sinner's challenges returning after his ban and congratulated him for reaching the final.
"I'm proud of how I approached the match mentally," he added. "I played well from start to finish."
Sinner's winning streak lasted since October when Alcaraz beat him at the China Open final.
"There have been tough months," Sinner admitted.
"Being here in the final is a great result for me." He felt he gave all he could during the match and viewed it as a good test.
