Alonso declares 'start of new era' at Real Madrid

Xabi Alonso announced a new era as Real Madrid's manager.

Alonso, 43, was appointed on a three-year deal. He replaces Carlo Ancelotti, who will coach Brazil's national team.

Last season was disappointing for Madrid. They lost the La Liga title to Barcelona. They also fell to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey and Spanish Supercopa finals. Additionally, they were eliminated by Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals.

During his speech at Valdebebas training ground, Alonso said, "It's the start of an era." He noted that fans are excited for this new chapter.

"It's a special day," he added. "I will mark this day on my calendar for life." He expressed happiness about returning to what he considers home.

Alonso previously won a league and cup double with Bayer Leverkusen in 2023-24. He explained why he returned to Madrid after leaving as a player 11 years ago.

"We have fantastic players," he said. "This team has great potential for now and the future."

He feels energized and hopeful about getting the best from his players. Alonso aims to build a strong team worthy of Real Madrid's history.

"I want a team that shows emotion and ambition," he stated. He also paid tribute to Ancelotti, who had significant success with Madrid.

"Carlo was my coach and a huge influence," Alonso said. "Without him, I might not be here."

He takes over Ancelotti's legacy with honor and pride. Alonso will officially begin his role on June 1 before the FIFA Club World Cup next month.
