Ruben Amorim has admitted he may need to resign as manager. This is if Manchester United continues their poor league form into next season.
United's disappointing performance reached a new low at Old Trafford. They lost 2-0 to West Ham, who hadn't won in eight games.
Amorim expressed concern about the club's mentality. He said, "We are losing the feeling that we are a massive club." He added that not fearing losses is dangerous for a big club.
Since January 26, his team has only beaten relegated Ipswich and Leicester. They are currently on a seven-game winless streak in the Premier League.
"Everyone here needs to think seriously," Amorim stated. He emphasized that the Europa League final isn't the main issue. The culture within the club and team needs change.
"This is a decisive moment in our history," he said. Amorim stressed the need for strength and bravery this summer. If things don't improve, he believes new leadership may be necessary.
On a points basis, United is heading for their worst season since 1930-31. They have only 39 points and sit 16th in the table, above only Tottenham and three relegated teams.
Amorim feels "embarrassed" by the current situation. Regardless of the outcome against Bilbao on May 21, major changes are needed at the club.
This season, United has suffered 17 Premier League defeats—the most since 1973-74 when they were relegated. They also have nine home defeats this season, tying their record for most losses at home.
Currently, they are winless in seven Premier League matches—tying their longest run ever in this competition. They've fallen behind early at Old Trafford more times than any other season.
West Ham's recent victory was their first league win at Old Trafford since 2006-07. This ended a streak of 16 league visits without a win there.
Despite creating more chances than West Ham (2.28 expected goals vs. 1.56), United still lost 2-0. Amorim expressed embarrassment over his team's position in the league table.
If United wins against Tottenham in the Europa League final, they will qualify for next season's Champions League. This could be worth around £100 million to them despite potential playoff losses.
Owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family face significant financial challenges with over £370 million in losses over five years. However, Amorim sees deeper issues beyond just financial concerns regarding competing at high levels.
"The final is by far our smallest problem," he stated firmly. He believes fundamental changes are necessary within the club’s structure and culture.
Amorim noted there is often urgency during Europa League matches but not during Premier League games: "There is a lack of urgency in everything we do."
He worries this lack of urgency affects United's status as a big club: "The mentality we once had is disappearing."
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy criticized Amorim’s negativity during interviews: "I would like to hear more solution-based answers."
Murphy suggested focusing on upcoming opportunities rather than dwelling on past failures might help motivate players moving forward.
