Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has ignited tensions ahead of Lyon’s Europa League tie with United by branding Andre Onana “one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history.”
Matic’s comment followed Onana’s claim that United are “way better” than Lyon. The Serbian, now 36, responded, “If legends like De Gea or Van der Sar made that statement, I’d reflect. But Onana hasn’t earned that right.”
Onana, who won the FA Cup in his debut season, fired back saying, “At least I’ve lifted trophies at the biggest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.”
Despite mixed performances, stats show Onana ranks second in goals prevented in the Premier League and leads in saves per 90 minutes since 2003-04.
However, he also tops United’s list for goals conceded per minute and has committed four errors leading to goals this season, intensifying debate over his role in a struggling squad.
