Arteta accepts Newcastle were better than Arsenal after 'painful' EFL Cup exit

Mikel Arteta Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta acknowledged that Newcastle United were "more efficient" than Arsenal after their 4-0 EFL Cup semi-final defeat.

Despite a strong start, including Martin Odegaard hitting the post, Arsenal fell behind quickly with goals from Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon. Arteta admitted his side lacked effectiveness in the final third, registering only three shots on target.

He noted that Newcastle capitalized on Arsenal’s mistakes, especially after a costly turnover by Declan Rice leading to Gordon's goal. Arteta also lamented the missed opportunity, saying it was a tough result given their expectations. Additionally, Gabriel Martinelli suffered a potential hamstring injury, and an MRI scan will determine its severity. Arteta stressed the need to recover and focus on future challenges.
