Ghanaian football is mourning the loss of Wilberforce “The Bulldozer” Mfum. The former Asante Kotoko and Black Stars striker passed away on May 11, 2025. He was 88 years old and had a brief illness.
Mfum was known for his raw power and clinical finishing. His fearless presence in the box helped define Ghana’s golden era in football. He first gained attention at the 1963 Africa Cup of Nations. There, he scored Ghana’s first goal in the tournament and added two more in the final. This helped Ghana win its first continental crown on home soil.
During his time with the Black Stars, Mfum scored 20 goals in 26 appearances. He also represented Ghana at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, leaving a lasting impact on every pitch he played on.
At the club level, Mfum was a key player for Asante Kotoko throughout the 1960s. His powerful runs and goal-scoring ability earned him legendary status in Kumasi and beyond.
Asante Kotoko announced his passing with deep sadness. They stated, "A legend of the club and a national hero, our thoughts and condolences go to his family."
In 1968, Mfum moved to the United States to play soccer. He joined teams like Baltimore Bays (NPSL) and Ukrainian SC in the German American Soccer League. Later, he played for Ukrainian Nationals where he became co-top scorer in ASL and New York Cosmos in NASL.
Mfum was one of the first African stars to play in U.S. professional leagues. His success paved the way for future generations of players.
