Austria striker's skull is fractured during attack

Austria striker Guido Burgstaller, 35, suffered a skull fracture after being attacked in Vienna.

Rapid Vienna reported that he was struck by an "unknown man" over the weekend, causing him to fall and sustain a serious head injury. After being examined at the scene, Burgstaller was taken to the hospital, where he will stay for several days.

His club expects him to be sidelined for months. Rapid Vienna expressed confidence in authorities to swiftly apprehend the assailant.

Burgstaller, who briefly played for Cardiff City in 2014, also had stints at Nurnberg, Schalke, and St. Pauli before rejoining Rapid in 2022. He was previously dropped from the Austria national team over a controversy in 2023.
