Azumah Nelson: Boxing icon to be honoured on June 13

African boxing legend Azumah Nelson will receive a World Boxing Council (WBC) award.

The ceremony will occur during a major fight show in Accra. This event is part of the WBC's The Year of Africa celebrations.

Legacy Rise Sports Promotions, owned by Sharaf Mahama, will host the event. Amir Khan Promotions is also involved. It will take place at the Bukom Boxing Arena on June 13, 2025.

This date marks 21 years since Nelson was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004.

Azumah Nelson, known as "Zoom Zoom," will be honored for his boxing career and achievements.

In December 1984, he won the WBC featherweight world title by defeating Wilfredo Gomez in Puerto Rico. He held this title until 1988 before moving up to super featherweight.

Nelson won the super featherweight title twice and kept it until 1997. He is considered the greatest African boxer of all time.

At age 66, he reigned as a world champion for over a decade.

In February, the first ABU/WBC Amateur Boxing tournament took place in Lagos, Nigeria.
