Barcelona in talks over free transfer swoop for Arsenal’s Thomas Partey

Barcelona is planning to sign Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey for free.

They have started talks with Partey's camp about a summer transfer. His future at Arsenal remains uncertain.

Partey, 31, will be out of contract in June. He has not agreed to a new deal yet, despite Mikel Arteta wanting him to stay.

Negotiations have been slow, attracting interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Both clubs want to strengthen their midfield without spending much money.

Sources say Partey is seen as an affordable option for Barcelona. Manager Hansi Flick admires the former Atletico Madrid player.

Partey joined Arsenal in 2020 for £45 million but has faced injuries. When healthy, he is a strong presence in midfield.

He played 35 league games last season as Arsenal competed for the title.

Partey would prefer to stay in London due to his bond with Arteta. He recently welcomed a new baby and wants stability for his family.

However, he seeks a deal that matches his worth and does not involve a pay cut. This could be his last major contract as he turns 32 this month.

Barcelona is dealing with Financial Fair Play restrictions but likes the idea of signing him for free. Other clubs from Saudi Arabia are also interested, but Barcelona has made the first serious move.

A source close to Partey said he respects Arsenal and enjoys living in London. However, he wants a deal that reflects his importance at the club.

If Partey leaves Arsenal, it would create space in their midfield for next season. The Gunners aim to sign Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi this summer by activating his £51 million release clause.

Reports indicate that senior Arsenal figures expect this deal to happen quickly. Personal terms and documents have already been agreed upon regarding Zubimendi's transfer.

Zubimendi is highly regarded by Arteta, who convinced him to join after he turned down Liverpool last summer.

This marks the beginning of a significant summer for Arsenal as they plan to invest around £200 million on new talent for Premier League success next season.
