Basketball: OKC Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wins NBA Most Valuable Player Award

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has won his first NBA MVP award. He led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a league-high 68 wins. This news was reported by ESPN's Shams Charania on Wednesday.

The official announcement will come later tonight. This follows the Thunder's victory over the Denver Nuggets in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals.

Last year, Gilgeous-Alexander finished as the runner-up for MVP. Nikola Jokic won his third MVP award that season. Jokic had an impressive year, averaging 29.6 points and 12.7 rebounds per game.

Gilgeous-Alexander also had a remarkable season. He led the league with 32.7 points per game, shooting 51.9% from the field. He averaged 6.4 assists, 5.0 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and 1 block.

He has been a first-team All-NBA selection for two seasons now. This makes him eligible for a four-year, $294 million supermax extension this summer. If signed, it would be the highest annual value deal in NBA history at $73.3 million.
