Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim faced a tough situation.
He rested goalkeeper Andre Onana for the trip to Newcastle. In his place, Altay Bayindir conceded four goals in a heavy defeat.
Bayindir made a costly mistake on Newcastle's fourth goal with a poor pass.
"We made many mistakes that made it harder to win," said Amorim. "It's hard to point to just one issue."
United now looks to quickly move past this loss. They have an important Europa League match against Lyon on Thursday.
Amorim must decide whether to bring back Onana or stick with Bayindir.
This decision is significant for the team's season.
Onana was not even on the bench against Newcastle, which was bold. Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane commented on this choice.
Keane noted that Onana has made big mistakes but also mentioned United's defense hasn't been too bad overall.
Onana faced criticism after two errors in the first leg against Lyon last week. Since last season, he has made eight errors leading to goals, more than any Premier League keeper.
Paul Robinson, a former England goalkeeper, discussed Onana's struggles. He said fans are frustrated and sometimes goalkeepers need a break from pressure.
Robinson emphasized good management involves supporting players during tough times.
Bayindir had his chance but struggled against Newcastle. He allowed four goals from six shots on target and mishandled several crosses.
He attempted 57 passes but only completed 27, resulting in a low success rate of 47.4%.
His most critical error came late in the game when he misplayed a pass that led to another goal for Newcastle.
Despite Onana’s issues, Amorim has generally kept faith in him as the first-choice keeper.
After the loss, Amorim focused on preparing for Lyon and did not reveal if Onana would return.
"You'll have to wait; I will choose the best XI," he stated confidently.
However, Robinson believes Onana will remain sidelined for now.
"I don't expect him to play against Lyon," he said firmly. "You can't just put him back in after one game off."
