Tom Ilube has resigned as Rugby Football Union (RFU) chairman following controversy over executive bonuses, with Sir Bill Beaumont appointed as interim chair.
Ilube, in office since 2021, faced growing calls for his removal due to concerns about the scale of bonuses, particularly for CEO Bill Sweeney, who earned £1.1m despite record losses.
The RFU Council initiated an independent review of the incentive plan, which has sparked public backlash.
Ilube cited the distractions caused by the issue as his reason for stepping down but promised to help ensure a smooth transition.
Beaumont, a former England captain, expressed his commitment to uniting and advancing the sport.
A vote of no-confidence in Ilube was gaining traction but did not occur before his resignation.
