Presbyterian Senior High School, Begoro (PRESEC Begoro), made history on May 9, 2025. They won their first Boys’ Soccer Championship title.
They defeated Manya Krobo Senior High School (MAKROSEC) 4-3 on penalties. The match ended in a goalless draw at the Koforidua Youth Resource Centre.
This victory capped off an impressive campaign for PRESEC Begoro. Six key players led the team—four from Form 3 and two from Form 2. These players also play for Bawa FC, a local lower-tier club.
PRESEC Begoro topped Group B with wins over Nifa SHS and Apedwa PRESEC. They also beat Mpraeso SHS in penalties, winning 5-4. In the knockout stages, they eliminated New Juaben SHS 1-0 on penalties in the quarter-finals. They then overcame Adeiso PRESEC 2-0 in the semis via shootout.
“It’s unbelievable! I have lost my voice,” said Isaac Okumah, Head of PE and coach. “When we got to school, we couldn’t even enter.” He added that today has been declared a holiday. The headmaster is organizing a party for the players.
Okumah is currently seeking sponsorship for several players who are graduating soon.
In the Girls’ division, MAKROSEC won their first championship title as well. They defeated Salvation Army SHS from Oda with a score of 3-0.
The team featured national players Belinda Kpentey, Christiana Ashiaku, and Blessing Tettey. These athletes recently won gold at the CAF African Schools Championship in Accra.
Desmond Dzodzordzi, PE Teacher at MAKROSEC, noted that this win boosted student morale. “We are grateful we came with hope—and we did win trophies,” he said.
The championship was organized by the Eastern Region Second Cycle School Sports Association under Ghana Education Service. It included winners and runners-up from eight zones across various sports disciplines.
