Berta may hold key to Partey's Arsenal future

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey's future is uncertain. Recently appointed sporting director Andrea Berta may help resolve this issue.

The 31-year-old is nearing the end of his best season at Arsenal. However, it’s unclear what will happen next for him. His importance was highlighted when he received a yellow card against Paris St-Germain. This booking rules him out of the Champions League semi-final's first leg.

Partey has made 45 appearances this season. His absence will hurt Arsenal's chances of reaching the final. It seems surprising that he is in such limbo regarding his contract situation.

So far, indications suggest Partey might leave when his contract expires this summer. Mikel Arteta gave a vague response about Partey's contract last week. He mentioned progress with all players but deferred to Berta and the club for details.

When asked if they want to keep Partey, Arteta said their intention is clear. However, Partey has not signed a new contract with only a month left in the season. This could imply that Arsenal isn't urgently trying to retain him.

Discussions are ongoing about offering Partey a new deal. It remains to be seen if this indicates a change in approach from Arsenal. Sources say Berta's arrival has changed perspectives on Partey's future.

Berta and Partey have worked together before at Atletico Madrid. He was responsible for bringing Partey to Arsenal for £45 million in 2020.

Arsenal must also consider Martin Zubimendi’s expected arrival from Real Sociedad this summer. If Zubimendi joins, would Partey still have a regular spot in the team?

It may not make financial sense to offer him a similar contract worth £200,000 per week if he won't start regularly. Last season, he played only 15 matches due to injuries but had successful groin surgery at the end of 2023.

Partey's age and injury history are factors in any potential extension offer as well. If he leaves, interest from abroad is reportedly growing.

He has been linked with a return to Atletico Madrid and Barcelona wants him on a free transfer too. There are also reports of interest from Saudi Arabia.
