Black Rockets celebrate international triumph with visit to NSA Boss

Ghana’s Youth Boxing Team, the Black Rockets, has returned from the 2025 African Youth Boxing Tournament in Conakry, Guinea. They performed exceptionally well, winning three gold medals. The team visited Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), to present their medals and trophy.

The Black Rockets finished third overall among nine competing nations. The gold medalists are all 18 years old: Mathias Ashitey in Flyweight (51kg), George Dowouna in Bantamweight (54kg), and Desmond Pappoe in Middleweight (75kg). Their success earned Ghana a cup to display with their medals.

Assistant coach George Martey led the team and played a key role in their preparation. Despite not having the full technical team, his leadership was crucial for their success. Tunisia and South Africa placed first and second with larger teams, but Ghana's quality stood out.

Upon returning to Ghana last Monday, the Black Rockets received a hero's welcome. They were driven through Accra to Bukom, known for its boxing heritage and support for local talent.

On Tuesday, they officially presented their medals and trophy to Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah at the NSA. Dignitaries attended this event, including head trainer Coach Charles Quartey who introduced the boxers and officials. Members of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) were also present, led by President Mr. Bernard Quartey.

Mr. Quartey expressed pride in the team's achievements and confidence in their potential for future international tournaments. GBF Vice President Dauda Fuseni called on government and corporate Ghana to invest in young boxers' development. He emphasized that with proper support, they could produce more champions.

Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah congratulated the athletes on their hard work and dedication. He advised them to remain humble and focused as they prepare for major competitions like the 2026 Commonwealth Games and 2028 Olympic qualifiers.

The Black Rockets plan to continue their recognition tour by meeting with the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee next. They will also visit Hon. Kofi Adams, Minister of Sports and Recreation.
