Armando Resendiz shocked the boxing world this weekend. He defeated Caleb Plant in a split decision. The fight took place at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.
Resendiz, 26 years old, improved his record to 16-2 with 11 KOs. Plant's record now stands at 23-3 with 14 KOs. Two judges scored the fight 116-112 for Resendiz, while one judge scored it 115-113 for Plant.
This upset likely affects a future match between Plant and Jermall Charlo. Charlo won his fight against Thomas LaManna by knockout in the sixth round. He was a strong favorite going into the event.
"I knew everyone would be against me," Resendiz said through an interpreter. "But I believed in myself and my corner." He added that he left the outcome to God and felt it was a tough but great fight.
Plant has only lost to Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez before this match. He thought he did enough to win but didn't strongly dispute the judges' scores.
"I felt like it was close," Plant said. "In close fights, sometimes it swings the other way." He believed he controlled the fight using his jab but accepted the judges' decision.
Resendiz celebrated his victory as the new Interim WBA Super Middleweight World Champion.
