Brazil play out dull goalless draw against Ecuador in Carlo Ancelotti’s debut as head coach

Carlo Ancelotti had a tough start as Brazil's coach. In Thursday's World Cup qualifiers, Brazil drew 0-0 against Ecuador. This result puts pressure on the Italian manager.

Brazil struggled to break through Ecuador's strong defense. They had few chances in the first half. The best opportunity came from Vinícius Júnior, but his shot was saved.

Ancelotti made many changes to the lineup. He replaced Dorival Júnior, who was fired after a 4-0 loss to Argentina. The 65-year-old coach gave Vinícius Brazil’s No. 10 shirt and brought back Casemiro and Richarlison.

He also gave a debut to defender Alex and played teenager Estêvão on the left wing. Estêvão replaced Raphinha, who was suspended.

From the start, Brazil seemed more defensive against Ecuador. Ecuador is unbeaten in its last 14 home games. In the second half, they threatened when John Yeboah made a pass, but Nilson Angulo was offside.

The draw leaves Ecuador in second place with 24 points. The top six teams qualify for next year's World Cup in North America. Ecuador will face ninth-placed Peru on Tuesday.
