Merseyside Police stated that the incident is not terrorism-related. They arrested a 53-year-old man from Liverpool. The assistant chief constable believes he was the driver. Authorities think he acted alone.
The North West Ambulance Service reported that 27 people went to the hospital. Four of them remain there, with two suffering serious injuries. In total, 47 people were injured in the incident.
Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram spoke to the BBC. He mentioned that four people are very ill in the hospital and hopes they recover. The Chief Fire Officer noted that four individuals, including one child, were trapped under the vehicle.
Police cars and ambulances quickly responded to Water Street. An air ambulance also arrived at the scene. A video showed a car driving into fans lining the street, swerving away from crowded areas.
Afterward, police surrounded the vehicle as angry fans approached it. Merseyside Police released a statement about a road traffic collision (RTC). They received reports just after 6 PM on May 26 about a car hitting pedestrians on Water Street.
The car stopped at the scene and a male suspect was detained. Later, police asked people not to speculate about what happened during this incident.
Liverpool issued a statement expressing their concern for those affected by this serious event. They are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the situation.
