The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has confirmed the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who passed away during a fight on March 29, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

Oluwasegun, who had received medical clearance from the Nigeria Boxing Board Control, was competing against Ghana’s John Mbanugu. He performed strongly in the early rounds but collapsed in the third round without receiving a punch at that moment.

Referee Richard Amevi immediately halted the fight, calling in medical personnel, but efforts to revive him failed. GBA President Abraham Kotei Neequaye has reported the incident to the Korle Bu Police and informed Nigerian boxing authorities.

The Sports Minister, Kofi Iddie Adams, has also been briefed.
