Liverpool's Premier League victory parade turned chaotic on Monday evening. A car collided with pedestrians in the city center, injuring nearly 50 people, including children.
A 53-year-old man, believed to be the driver, was arrested at the scene. The collision occurred on Water Street, near the Royal Liver Building and town hall. This happened shortly after roads reopened following the main parade.
Thousands of Liverpool fans were celebrating when fear and confusion took over. Emergency services arrived around 6 PM to assist those injured.
The North West ambulance service reported that 27 people were hospitalized. Two of these individuals, including one child, sustained serious injuries. Additionally, 20 patients received treatment at the scene; four children were among the injured.
Merseyside police's Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims stated that this incident is not being treated as terrorism. They are not searching for any additional suspects related to the event.
The Prime Minister called the scenes “appalling.” Liverpool FC expressed their “thoughts and prayers” for those affected by the incident.
Footage showed police cordons around a littered road with a heavy police presence. Ambulances and a fire engine were also on-site.
Witnesses described chaos as people ran past them crying and angry after the collision. One witness saw a teenager holding his leg and bleeding amid many others fleeing.
Les Winsper, who witnessed the crash, said people banged on car windows before it accelerated into the crowd. He noted that one victim was thrown “about 20 feet” into the air.
Another witness described how he saw a grey vehicle ram into crowds near an ambulance parked nearby. Harry Rashid said it was traveling fast down Water Street when it hit fans enjoying the parade.
Rashid recalled hearing loud thuds as people were knocked off the car’s bonnet. He described how crowds tried to smash its windows before it sped away again through more victims.
Emergency services arrived quickly at the scene to help those injured. Natasha Rinaldi watched from her friend’s living room and noted people's anger and shock as police intervened.
The North West ambulance service cleared the scene by about 9:30 PM. Leaders like Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper received updates about events throughout the night.
Starmer expressed his thoughts for those affected by this shocking incident while thanking emergency responders for their swift action.
Liverpool FC stated they are in direct contact with Merseyside police regarding this serious incident during their trophy parade. They pledged full support to emergency services handling this situation.
Mayor Steve Rotheram extended his condolences to all affected individuals, especially those injured during this difficult day for Liverpool city region.
