Ollie Watkins became Aston Villa's record Premier League goal scorer. His winning goal against Bournemouth boosted the team's Champions League hopes.
Villa faced a challenge when Jacob Ramsey received a second yellow card in the 80th minute. Despite being down to 10 men, they held on to stay sixth in the Premier League.
In first-half stoppage time, Watkins scored with a delicate touch. He guided Morgan Rogers' low cross into the bottom corner. This was his 75th league goal for Villa, surpassing Gabby Agbonlahor's record.
The match ended nervously for Villa after Ramsey's second yellow card. He tripped David Brooks on the halfway line and had already been booked earlier for confronting Adam Smith.
Bournemouth nearly equalized in the final seconds of the game. Emiliano Martinez made a fingertip save against Antoine Semenyo’s close-range header. Defender Matty Cash cleared the ball off the line just in time.
Aston Villa is now level on points with Newcastle and Chelsea, who play each other on Sunday. Unai Emery continues to lead his team toward Champions League qualification.
